Without doubt
the legend that is the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is still far and away
the place to stay if you are looking for both jaw-dropping luxury as
well as a jaw-dropping experience at the Ngorongoro Crater. The first
thing that astounds when you arrive here is that it sits right on the
edge of the crater rim itself, looking down to the crater floor below.
The second is that quirky and spectacular rooms that the local artisans
of the area constructed almost 20 years ago...the whole experience is
fantastic and, while expensive, worth it.
The
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is divided into the north camp, the south camp
and the tree camp (the north and the south offer views from all of the
rooms...the tree camps has less rooms and so is more intimate, but does
not guarantee views) there is an otherworldly feel to the whole place.
Game, such as zebra and buffalo are regularly to be found wandering
amongst the relative security of the rooms, and that view is just
spectacular!
The design of the rooms themselves has been to maximize the view with the bedroom, the freestanding bath and even the loo all having the panoramic views. In the decoration, the Crater Lodge uses plush furnishings and fabrics in order to create a cozy and welcoming environment. Along with this, each has its own butler who will merrily pre-run a bath for you or stoke the fire in anticipation of your return from an evening's drive in the crater.
The food at the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, similarly, is really spectacular and, while it is not that often possible at this altitude due to the temperature, dining outside, with the view of the crater in front and a crisp African wine to hand is a memory not forgotten!
